Tom Lynch has been working as a creative, innovative television writer/producer for over three decades. During that time he has created, written, directed and produced some of the most successful television shows in the world for the youth-centered demographic. From live-action comedies, to animated musicals, to reality-based variety shows; Lynch has always worked to create inspiring content and he continues to do so today with the same passion and creativity with which he began his career.
In the early 1980s, kids’ programming was the bottom of the television barrel. But Lynch, then a rock-n-roll TV producer, was one of the few pioneers who saw it was possible to create compelling programming for kids that could engage their minds, imaginations and energy.
In his first project, Lynch combined the best of his music experience with his unique ability to tap into kids’ interests. KIDS Incorporated, the first variety show for youngsters, was born—and so were the successful new careers of Jennifer Love Hewitt and Stacy Ferguson (Fergie of The Black Eyed Peas).
Soon, Lynch was taking kids’ programming and bringing it into the mainstream, helping to make it the dynamic, highly competitive field it is today. The New York Times called him the creator of the “tween” genre.
His next landmark show was The Secret World of Alex Mack. The series was the first to feature a strong female role model as its lead character and it was one of Nickelodeon’s first breakout hits.
Lynch has also worked internationally on the Emmy-nominated NBC series, Scout’s Safari, which was set and filmed on location in South Africa. In addition, he journeyed to China, where he served as executive producer on China’s first Nickelodeon’s Kids Choice Honors.
Continuing to push boundaries and expand the minds of his audience, in 2005, Tom Lynch created the four time GLADD-nominated series for The N, South of Nowhere. Over four seasons, the groundbreaking and innovative show explored issues of race, religion and sexuality as it followed the members of an Ohio family who move to Los Angeles.
Not to be confined to one form for too long, Lynch also ventured into the world of television animation by teaming up with Andre Benjamin and created the Emmy-winning Class of 3000 in 2006 for Cartoon Network.
In 2007, Lynch broke into the documentary film world with Piece of Mind, a film that took three years to make and focused on the lives and art of Los Angeles graffiti artists. The film had its first screening at the Durango Film Festival, and continued the festival circuit with the Newport Beach Film Festival and the LA United Film Festival.
In 2009 Tom launched The Assistants, a series he executive produced for The N, created by Hollywood veterans Chris Viscardi and Will McRobb. The show follows the lives of four assistants as they try to make it in Hollywood.
In a divergence from the youth culture space, Lynch developed and executive produced a two hour movie for Spike TV and MGM entitled Black Souls, set in the underground Irish mob world of South Boston, where the top dog mob boss has just gone missing, and everyone is fighting to gain control of the world of sex, guns, and murder.
In 2010, Nickelodeon premiered Lynch’s action-comedy series The Troop, about a group of talented high school kids who are forced to battle monsters in order to protect their school and classmates. The shooting of the second season wrapped in late 2010 and the new episodes will air in the spring of 2011.
Another Tom Lynch Company project is also set to premiere in 2011 for Nickelodeon, Bucket & Skinner’s Epic Adventures. The buddy comedy about two surfing best friends at a Southern California high school has created buzz with industry insiders.
Tom Lynch is a prolific, award winning and in-demand Writer/Producer who continues to extend the reach of youth-centered programming with a style that is both relevant and innovative. He is currently writing projects for MTV, Spike, Cartoon Network, The Hub, SyFy and is overseeing the production of two Nickelodeon shows currently on the air. Lynch is also in talks with myriad of other networks, both here in the United States and overseas.
No matter what the medium, the Tom Lynch Company is one of the few independent production companies still inspired and driven by the signature voice of its creator. Lynch’s shows have been nominated and won Emmy awards, GLAAD Awards, Humanitas Prize, Kid’s Choice Awards, Teen Choice Awards, WGA Awards, DGA Awards, Image Awards, Gemini Awards, Leo Awards and Young Artists Awards. Tom continues to lead the industry in new directions and take audiences to places they’ve never been before, illuminating the magic of the human experience.
