The Secret World of Alex Mack closed up shop twenty years ago — on January 15, 1998 — after a glorious four-season run on Nickelodeon, back in the day when there was a lot less competition for tween eyeballs, and Nick ruled the roost. Good times.

The series was about a young girl — just starting junior high as the series opens, but eventually a high schooler —who is thoroughly convinced of her own ordinariness until she is accidentally doused by a secret chemical, called GC-161 (very purposefully, as you will read below), that spills forth from a chemical plant’s truck as it nearly crashes into her on her way home from school. Hence, she is endowed with certain (modest) superpowers, like telekinesis and the ability to reformulate her molecular structure into a liquid puddle, which she keeps secret from everyone except her brainiac older sister, Annie (Meredith Bishop), and laid-back good buddy Ray (Darris Love), but especially from the ruthless, rapacious gang over at the chemical plant…
